On Wednesday, Year 1 had a real life knight come to visit and train the children to become Knights of Pennthorpe! Knight Dan taught the children all about the medieval times, what they used to eat, drink, do for jobs, wear and do in their spare time. Miss Goddard and Dan had an archery competition to see who could hit the bullseye and there was lots of fun dressing up Miss O’Reilly as a knight. The children loved touching the artefacts and trying on the helmets and chainmail, they had so many questions and absorbed lots of medieval fun facts. What a fantastic day!
Knights in training
Wow, what a fantastic week the Year 1 children have had! They have been exploring their imaginations in English, looking at fractions and even got trained by a knight!
In English the children have been exploring the book ‘The kiss that missed’. The children were read the story however they did not get to see the front cover and using their imaginations had to create a front cover for the book and a blurb. They used their creative skills and used role play to act out the knight travelling through the deep dark forest and the children had to use their five senses and describe and write what they could see, hear, feel, taste and smell.
During Maths the Year 1 children have been exploring fractions, what is a half and what is a quarter. They have been using their fine motor skills by cutting up shapes and representing the fraction, as well as using part whole models to show half or a quarter of a number. The children loved using snack time as a way of representing halving and quarters.
In PSHE the class have been looking at how amazing it is to be ourselves and celebrating ‘what makes me me!’ by reading the book ‘Perfectly Norman’ and looked at why it is important to love ourselves and not be embarrassed. The children discussed what makes them proud to be them and described their friends using positive and loving adjectives. /the children then grew their very own Pennthorpe wings to celebrate how we are all different and unique!
For Art Spotlight Week, the children were lucky enough to have 2 sessions! The children collaborated with different year groups and created a weaving piece of art and designed a 3D seed using oil pastels.
The children (and teachers!) are very much looking forward to dressing up like royalty next week!
