The reduction experiment is an unusual one since we carry it out on the head of a matchstick! Iron oxide is mixed with a carbon source and then heated strongly on a Bunsen flame. This causes the iron to lose its oxygen and produce iron. Iron oxide is non magnetic but the iron produced is magnetic which is how we test that the reaction has been successful.
