As the Christmas season is just beginning, our Middle and Senior Prep children are marking the beginning of the suspense and surprise of Christmas gifting. This week our Secret Santa activity has launched; one of the not-to-be-missed Pennthorpe traditions for our Years 5-8 children.
So what is Secret Santa? It’s mystery. It’s excitement. It’s the joy of knowing someone is thinking about you. It’s the thrill of opening something but, more than that, the magic of connection. It’s experiencing that tingly feeling of love no matter who is showing they care.
The idea can be traced back to the Scandinavian tradition of knocking on someone’s door, throwing a present inside when it opens, then running away. They call this Juklapp, or “knocking Christmas.”
This week, all of our Year 5 – 8 children have picked the name of one of their peers out of the Christmas Hat, and are now invited to choose a thoughtful gift with which to delight their recipient. The children always have fun trying to think of the perfect gift to give without accidentally blowing their cover!
Our elfish rules are:
- The suggested value of the gift is £5
- Wrap your gifts and label them with the recipients name but not the gifter
- Deadline for bringing in gifts is Friday 2 December.
