Energy is lost at every level of a food chain. Hunting, escaping, communicating and even chewing all mean that a food chain does not contain enough energy to sustain more than 5 levels. The pupils played different roles of consumers, predators and prey in order to eat the ‘packets of energy’. They quickly discovered that the more energy you save then the less you need to eat. The predators saved energy by hunting in packs, waiting by the water hole and communicating effectively.
