Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions. In September 2018, Ariana, one of our Year 1 pupils, became acutely unwell, and was subsequently diagnosed with severe heart failure, due to a dilated cardiomyopathy. Ariana was transferred to the Royal Brompton for four weeks, and then to Great Ormond Street, where she underwent two major cardiac operations to try and save her life. Heartbreakingly, she passed away on 16th November 2018, due to a catastrophic brain haemorrhage.
CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is a charity determined to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths (YSCD) through awareness, screening and research, and supporting affected families. Since Ariana’s death, her family and friends have supported CRY in her memory. Through donations, CRY can reduce the frequency of YSCD by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young.
In April, Ariana’s Dad, Tariq, will be donning his trainers to run the London Marathon to raise funds for CRY in memory of Ariana. Anything the Pennthorpe community can spare to help him reach his target of £8,000 will be so appreciated. Please donate via Tariq’s JustGiving page here.
