The children experimented with iron filings, a piece of paper and magnets. They held the magnets under a piece of paper and sprinkled the filings over the top to see what they did. The class learnt that the ends of the magnets are the strongest as they attracted more of the iron filings and the middles were weaker.
After that, using small compasses Mr. Shaw taught the children about the lines of force and why they make magnets attract or repel.
