Every Non-verbal reasoning (NVR) topic is studied over a course of at least two lessons. The first is a practical lesson in which the children are encouraged to use manipulatives to make/use 3D shapes and physically test things out. This helps them to see how manipulations such as forming nets, rotations and combinations of 3D shapes come together.
In the second lesson, the children are encouraged to use and apply their new found understanding of an element of 3D shape to try out some Atom questions. Having used concrete resources the previous lesson the children are better able to visualise the shapes and manipulations and have greater success at solving the online problems. Every Atom question is multiple choice so a process of elimination is used to help the children think and give reasons as to why some of the solutions are incorrect. This systematic approach ensures that the children are taking their time and working methodically and accurately.
Well done Year 5 – you are making great progress with your NVR skills and your use of the Atom platform!
