This was a maths day organised by the charity Racing to School.

The children were given a quick briefing and then given ‘racing silks’ to wear. When they were dressed appropriately they were taken to the Parade Ring, where the horses parade pre-race, and the Weighing Room, where the jockeys are weighed in order to sort out the handicapping for the race.

At both of these venues the children were given mathematical problems to solve, for example – How many horses can safely parade around the parade ring at the same time?

After lunch, which took place in our own private box, we watched a couple of races. There were winners and losers all round as the children could choose which horse they felt would win. They could make some really educated guesses as the official race card had been fully explained to them.

This was a tremendous day full of really practical maths and set in the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood. The children were also very well behaved which made the day even more enjoyable!
