The day began on the sunny top field where the children were split into 4 main groups. Each group took part on a rotation of activities which included collaborative Quidditch with a real life human Snitch, a communication drawing from instructions only task, a towel flip timed mission and pole swapping challenge.
Pennthorpe went to CCC day!
As part of the Middle Years Spotlight Week, on Thursday Years 5 and 6 enjoyed a whole day of Challenge, Communication and Collaboration based tasks.
In the Quidditch I loved the fact that straight away the game used up all C's which was exactly what the day was for, I also loved running after Flyn at the end!Ellie, Year 6 Pupil
After break, the children moved into the woods, where they were faced with an orienteering teacher quiz, matching photos of teachers attached to orienteering stamp points to the facts about them on their sheets. They were very surprised to find out that Mr Mac was covered in ice cream and dunked by King Neptune when they crossed the Equator for the first time, that Mr Bennett has played rugby with Marcus Smith and that Mrs Tusler is an Australian citizen!
Following the quiz, they made shelters in the woods out of tarpaulin and para-cord. Each team embellished their campsite with (in some cases) full woodland fire pit and spit roast stand.
After a hearty break and a good run around at break, the children re-entered the woods in their teams, to face 3 more challenges. Now imagining that they were stranded in the woods and surrounded by hot lava, each team had to navigate their way down the hillside to the bridges over the stream, stepping only on a limited number of spots. The teams quickly realised that communication was key to getting the spots to the people at the front of their lines.
I really liked today I think my favourite part was when we had to move from spot to spot.Niamh, Year 6 Pupil
Once they had made it across the bridge, the teams then had to try and transport 5 cups of water across woodland terrain with only 2 pieces of guttering, and the cups – a lot harder than it sounds when you cannot move if you were holding anything containing water! Most teams managed to transport 1 or 2 cups of water successfully.
Finally, the teams were tasked with safely protecting an egg from falling from a height. Using various materials they worked in subteams to design a capsule that enable their egg to survive the fall intact. The teams came up with various imaginative designs, which had varying results of success when they were dropped from the staffroom window down to the egg-cited children waiting on the terrace below.
Thank you for the lovely day set up for everyone and I really enjoyed it a I think everyone else did. My favourite thing was egg rocket making, but I loved everything. It would be fun to do this more oftenOliver, Year 6 Pupil
The staff were impressed with all the skills the students demonstrated throughout the day. There were a few standouts throughout the day and special mentions go to Rose for her excellent descriptive vocabulary in the drawing tasks, Gideon and Harriet W for their collaboration in catching the super fast human Snitch Flynn, and Will D for his team work in the afternoon activities.
