The children were visited by Sergeant Powell from the Home Guard who spent the day leading them through a huge range of information and activities. They started by acting out how European politics and the First World War contributed to the outbreak of World War II and reviewed major events from the conflict including Dunkirk and the Blitz. The class discussed air raid precautions and practised fighting incendiary devices using a stirrup pump. Finally, the children were persuaded to join the Home Guard and conducted a rank and file drill.
